God mocks people throughout the Bible when they think that they are better than him, know more than him and are rebellious spirits. One of the times that sticks out to me is the tower of Babel. If you are unfamiliar with the story, it is found in the book of Genesis. The short version of the story is that a group of people decided to get together and build a tower to heaven because they thought that they were so great. They all spoke the same language, so they were able to communicate with each other. God seeing what the people were trying to accomplish, decided to change their language so that they couldn’t communicate with each other. When you think about the story, you see a large group of people thinking that they were so smart that they could build a temple to heaven. God seeing what was going on, decided to put an end to their pride by confusing them so they couldn’t finish the tower.

If you are on social media, you will understand how laughing at someone is mocking them. The laughing emoji is not usually used because someone told a funny joke. It is often used to mock someone’s behavior or opinions. Mocking someone to put them down is completely different than the mocking that God does in the Bible. God doesn’t laugh at people to be mean or belittle them, instead he laughs at the wild abominations because of their prideful disrespect of his holiness. Here are a few more examples of God mocking people throughout the Bible.

Psalm 37:13 New American Standard Bible

13 The Lord laughs at him, For He sees that his day is coming.

Psalm 2:4 New American Standard Bible

He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them.

Psalm 59:8 New American Standard Bible

But You, Lord, laugh at them; You scoff at all the nations.

Proverbs 3:34 New American Standard Bible

34 Though He scoffs at the scoffers, Yet He gives grace to the needy.

Proverbs 1:26 New American Standard Bible

26 I will also laugh at your disaster; I will mock when your dread comes,

Notice how when God mocks, it is righteous mocking, it is being done to those that challenge his authority. God is not mocking to antagonize someone weaker than him just to belittle his creation. He is using these examples to put people in their place so that they recognize his divine authority over all creation. When the verses of mocking are being used, the example given is to mock sinful behavior because it is unholy. I think that it is quite all right to follow this lead and mock ungodly behavior. When behaviors attack God’s character, authority and purpose in our life, they should be mocked. Satan should be mocked and so should those carrying out his deeds.
